Hazel Ann Leonard

Hazel Ann Leonard, 91, of Jarratt Virginia passed on Thursday, August 11, 2022. Born in San Antonio, Texas on October 4, 1930, she was the daughter of Charles Alfred and Mary Edna Horn.  She is proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, Melvin Temple Leonard; two siblings, Charlene Horn Snavley and Joyce Horn Snavley, both of San Antonio, Texas; her daughter, Deborah Leonard Morris and her two sons, Charles Gary Leonard and Melvin Temple Leonard, Jr.

While growing up in San Antionio, Hazel Ann attended St. Cecilia’s elementary school, Incarnate Word High School, and graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word, with a Bachelor of Science degree to become a registered nurse.  Hazel Ann met her future husband, Melvin Temple Leonard of Jarratt, Virginia while he was serving in the United States Air Force at Fort Sam Huston in San Antonio.  They were married in Emporia , Virginia and began their married life in Jarratt where they made their home.  Hazel Ann was an educator, teaching for many years in the Sussex County public school system and later as a nurse aide instructor at Rowanty Technical Center in Carson.  She retired from teaching and continued her active involvement as a member of Centenary United Methodist Church of Jarratt teaching Sunday school and serving on other church committees and projects.  Hazel Ann continued her active interest in reading, world events , and local activities throughout her life.  Hazel Ann touched many lives and many hearts; her kindness and warm smile brought so much happiness to those who knew her.

She is survived by a three grandchildren, Jennifer Ann Morris Gilliland, Jason Michael Morris and Jamie Marie Leonard, and two great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Benjamine Gilliland. She has numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family members in Texas, Arizona and Virginia and many friends, former students and colleagues throughout the area.

Hazel Ann requested a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, Jarratt Virginia or charity of your choice.
