Eugene Mondell Grizzard

Eugene Mondell Grizzard, 91, of Capron, Virginia, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, February 23, 2026. He was born December 10, 1934, to Edith and Wilroy Grizzard. He was lifelong member of Antioch Baptist Church in Yale, Virginia where he served as deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He was a graduate of Virgina Tech (1956) and served in the US Army and Army Reserves for 7 years (1957-1964).

Before retirement in 1991, Mr. Grizzard was employed by the Virginia Department of Corrections as farm manager, then Warden at Southampton Correctional Center and following that at Greensville Correctional Center.

He was a farmer at heart, raising peanuts, corn and soybeans as well as hogs and cattle.

Mr. Grizzard was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Patricia Worrell Grizzard; his parents, Edith and Wilroy Grizzard, and his son-in-law, Buddy Barber.

He is survived by his children, Terry Barber, Carla Marshall (Dennis), Mike Grizzard (Debby) and Maynard Grizzard (Angela); 12 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Burgess and brother-in-law, Allen Ray Worrell.

The family expresses their sincere appreciation to the many caregivers that supported him at home, at East Pavilion, and in his final days at Southampton Memorial Hospital. Their loving attention to his daily needs were a blessing to his life in his final years.

Following a private graveside committal, a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, February 27 at Antioch Baptist Church, 20230 Peters Bridge Rd, Yale, Virginia.

The family will receive friends at Mr. Grizzard’s home 4-7 p.m. Thursday, February 26 and at a reception in the church fellowship hall following the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Antioch Baptist Church, c/o James Dunn, 15367 Courthouse Rd, Stony Creek, Virginia 23882 or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
