“Well done, my good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:21
On August 27, 2024, Charles Micheal Anderson, 68, went home to be with the Lord after a courageous battle against Parkinson’s. Affectionately known as “Nandaddy” by his grandchildren, he was a man who loved to play whether it was aliens and monsters or baseball and football. Even before he had children, his wife would open the door to knocks from boys asking if Mr. Mike could come out and play.
Mike was the son of Charles Henry Anderson and Julia Pendergrass Anderson. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Ashley Rochelle Anderson.
He is survived by the love of his life since 8th grade, his “dearest angle”, Rochelle Dunn Anderson and two children: Micheal Ryan Anderson (Christina) of Chesapeake, Virginia and Lauren Victoria Donavin (Daniel) of Wendell, NC.
He is also survived by seven grandchildren whom he loved dearly: Faith Ashleigh Anderson, Ryan Tyler Anderson, Halleigh Jane Anderson, Brooklynn Rochelle Anderson, Charles Declan Anderson, Zoe Abigail Donavin, and Olivia Grace Donavin. He loved going on family vacations with his children and grandchildren along with having them all at the lake house. He also traveled as many weekends as possible to watch them play ball.
Also left to cherish his memory are his sister Kathy Anderson Gibson, his Aunt Fannie Pendergrass Brame, his cousin who was like a sister, Denise Brame Gill, and his best friend Timothy Redmond who was like the brother he never had.
In addition to these, he had numerous nieces and nephews who loved spending time with their Uncle Mike.
His faith was an integral part of his life. Mike was a member of Lake Gaston Baptist Church where he served in many capacities during his 23-year membership. He was on the Board of Deacons, a Sunday School teacher, an Awanas leader, and a coach. He thoroughly enjoyed the Men’s Prayer Breakfast every other week. Mike served as a Christian role model to many young men throughout the years, recently by sending devotions nightly to a small group of young men who meant a lot to him.
Another love of Mike’s was beach music. On any given Friday night, you’d find him counting “1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5, 6” in the kitchen or on the deck with the radio belting out beach music songs. His and Rochelle’s favorite yearly trip was to the East Coast Shag Classic at Wrightsville Beach. Mike, with his lack of rhythm, was well known as a lifetime member of Bobby and Cheryl’s beginner shag class. Rochelle thinks that he didn’t want to graduate because he loved the instructors so much. His favorite song was “If My Feet Refuse to Move, I’ll Be Good To Go.”
Mike retired in 2019 after 40 years from Valley Proteins working his way up from lab tech to General Manager throughout North Carolina and Virginia. He was transferred several times, working in Greensboro, Gastonia, Asheville, Chesapeake, Fayetteville, Emporia, and Lewiston-Woodville. In each city he lived, he first found a new church. Then, he became involved in youth sports, spending his time coaching football, basketball, soccer, and baseball.
As we remember Mike, let us celebrate the love, laughter, and faith he shared with us all. Please join the family for a celebration of his life on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at Lake Gaston Baptist Church. The service will begin at 2:00 pm in the sanctuary followed by his burial at the church cemetery and a reception in the LGBC Family Life Center.
