Katherine Jarratt

JARRATT, Katherine Eppes, 92, passed away on Friday, October 12, 2012. Katherine was born in Stony Creek and was a life-long town resident. She graduated from Stony Creek High School, attended Mary Baldwin College, and graduated in 1941 from Farmville State Teachers College (now known as Longwood University). Katherine’s career was devoted to providing public service to citizens in the greater Sussex County community. During World War II she worked for the U.S. Office of Price Administration. She later worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Stabilization & Conservation Service until retirement. Katherine was an English major and avid historian with memberships in the Virginia Historical Society, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Library of Virginia, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Preservation Virginia, and Sussex County Historical Society. She was always helpful in providing research about Sussex County genealogy and local history concerning old stores, road names, and churches in the area. She was a life-long member of Fort Grove United Methodist Church in Stony Creek. Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin F. and Hattie R. Jarratt, of Stony Creek. She is survived by her brother, Frederick R. Jarratt, and his wife, Helen Page; nephews Gordon Jarratt and his wife, Carolyn, and Benjamin Jarratt II and his wife, Mary; niece, Helen Sue Jarratt Agee and her husband, Charlie; great nephews Marshall Agee, Tyler Agee, Colin Jarratt and Patrick Quinn; and great nieces Jessica Jarratt, Brigid Quinn and Caitlin Quinn. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Road, Jarratt, VA.
Graveside services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Jarratt Family Cemetery, also in Jarratt. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jackson-Feild Homes, 546 Walnut Grove Drive, Jarratt, VA, 23867.
